Description

Orchard Cottage is a house, originally dating back to the 17th century, though it has been significantly altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was later divided but is now a single dwelling. The house is primarily timber-framed, with a brick façade largely rebuilt in the 19th century. It has thatched and plain tile roofs. The original layout consisted of a three-bay hall with a single-bay cross-wing to the rear, though there have been substantial 20th-century additions to the right side.

The cottage is one storey and has an attic. While much of the timber framing has been replaced or covered with brick, some original features remain, including a cruck blade, fragmentary panelling, and wall posts with short straight tension braces and a short straight tension brace, visible in the right gable end. The windows are largely 20th-century casements, with late 19th-century segmental stone heads. Dormers, one gabled and one half-gabled, are visible on the thatched and tiled roof sections respectively. The tiled roof section also features a dentilled eaves cornice. Two brick stacks are present: one on the back wall on the right side, and a truncated stack on the left side of the cross-wing.

Inside, the room to the left of the entrance retains a chamfered spine beam and joists with ogee stops, as well as an inglenook fireplace. The original hall range has a Queen-strut roof. The 20th-century additions do not possess any notable architectural merit. The building is included on the list for its group value.
