Description
This is an open hall house, likely dating to the 15th or 16th century, that has been adapted as a cottage. It was remodelled in the 17th century and subsequently altered. The house is timber-framed with cruck construction, with painted brick and plaster infill, and some sections rebuilt in painted brick and local rubblestone. The roof is thatched and has a half-hipped gable on the right side. Originally, the plan consisted of a central open hall with service and solar bays at each end.
The house is one storey high with an attic, lit by a central gable. The timber framing is visible on the front and back walls, featuring square panels extending from the cill to the wall-plate. The windows are of irregular placement. The front has two late 19th-century casement windows on the ground floor, to the right of a 20th-century gabled timber porch, which incorporates a fixed window to the left and a late 20th-century casement to the far left. A central brick ridge stack sits to the left of the porch, and an external end stack to the right has a blocked doorway directly to the left of the ridge stack.
Inside, three original cruck trusses remain. These were formerly fitted with collar beams, and one appears to have been reused in a cross wall of a ground-floor room. The roof structure includes single-trenched purlins and straight wind braces. The left gable end is now brick-clad but may hide another cruck truss. At the time of a 1985 survey, the apexes of the crucks were not visible, but the yokes were partly visible and more of each cruck may survive in the roof space.
