Description
A late 16th-century farmhouse, extended in 1622 (marked by a datestone) with later additions and alterations. The building is timber-framed with a brick plinth and painted brick infill, and has a machine tile roof. Originally, the design was a hall of two and a half framed bays, with a two-bay cross-wing projecting to the left. A twin-gabled addition was built in 1622, set in the angle between the hall and cross-wing, and a mid-19th century brick addition extends at right angles to the rear. The building is two storeys high. The timber framing consists of rectangular panels, three from cill to wall plate, with long straight tension braces and V-struts from the collar to the front gable of the cross-wing; larger panels are present in the 17th-century part. The windows are irregularly placed and are late 19th and 20th-century casements, with one on each first floor gable and on the ground floor of the left and right gables. A late 19th-century gabled timber-framed porch is situated in the centre gable, and features a 20th-century door. A prominent red brick ridge stack is located to the left of the hall range. The centre gable bears a date stone inscribed “1622”. Inside, the 1622 section has chamfered spine beams with ogee stops. An inglenook fireplace beneath the hall stack has a chamfered wooden lintel and a stone inscribed "JOHN HIGGINSON/ EDWARD JOHNSON/LAYD THIS STON/1622".
