Description
Garmston House is an early to mid-18th century farmhouse, now a house, located in Leighton and Eaton Constantine. The building is constructed of red brick on a stepped plinth, with a machine tile hipped roof. It is two storeys and an attic height and has a floor band. The original facade features five bays, with cross-paned sash windows to the first floor. The ground floor now has late 19th-century three-light casements with segmental heads on either side of the central entrance. A late 19th-century gabled brick porch, incorporating a half-glazed door and covering an infilled original window opening, is positioned centrally. Two early 20th-century gabled dormers are set into the roof slope. Integral stacks are located to the left and right, the right stack being internal and the left external, both with moulded capping. The right return elevation features blind windows on each floor, with mullion and transom detail painted to resemble the original appearance. Two hip-roofed projections extend from the rear, flanking a central gable which contains an illegible date stone. A Salop Fire Insurance plate is situated above a four-panel door. A lower mid-19th century service range adjoins the left side. Inside, a staircase is located to the right of the front entrance, rising to the attic; it has carved splat balusters, a moulded handrail and newels. The left-hand ground-floor room retains stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops and heavy joists. A late 18th-century fireplace with an Adam-style wooden surround is found in the right-hand ground-floor room.
