Description

This is a small house dating from the 18th century. It is built of coursed sandstone rubble with brick arches over the ground floor openings. The roof is slate, with gabled ends and gable end stacks featuring red brick shafts. The house has a double-depth plan with two main front rooms, which were originally heated from the gable end stacks. The kitchen is on the right, accessible directly from the central front doorway, and a smaller parlour is on the left, with straight stairs at the rear rising from that room. There is an unheated service area within an outshut at the back.

The south front is almost symmetrical, with two windows. The windows are approximately 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars; the ground floor windows have cambered brick arches, while the first floor windows are smaller casements. A doorway is located to the right of the centre, with a cambered brick arch and an old plank door. A similar doorway is on the left end of the west side, but has a 20th-century plank door. The east end has a large external stone stack with set-offs at the top and a brick shaft, incorporating a circular oven at its base. The rear roof slopes down as a catslide over a single-storey integral outshut.

Inside, the internal partitions are timber-framed. The right-hand room features a chamfered cross-beam with run-out stops, partially exposed slightly chamfered joists, and a large stone fireplace with a stop-chamfered lintel, bake-oven, pot-hanger, and spit-rack above. The left-hand room has exposed joists but no main beam. Visible in the upper floor rooms is a central closed truss with a morticed collar and large purlins set on the backs of the principals.
