Description

Halo Cottage is a house dating from the early 18th century, with alterations made around the mid-19th century. The structure is timber-framed with plastered infilling, some brick nogging, and a front wall rebuilt in a rat-trap bond pattern using red brick. It has a slate roof with gabled ends. A large sandstone stack with set-offs is located at the south end, and it has a brick shaft.

The plan consists of a two-room cottage; the larger room to the south is heated by a gable-end fireplace, while the smaller, unheated room to the north contains a staircase leading to two attic chambers. An outshut was likely added in the 19th century and is located to the west. An attached timber-framed outbuilding at the north end formerly housed a cider mill and press.

The south-facing front has two windows and is symmetrical, with 19th-century 3-light casement windows on the ground floor, featuring cambered brick arches, and 2-light casement windows on the first floor. A central doorway has a plank door and a canopy supported by shaped brackets. The rear and ends of the cottage display exposed timber framing. The rear outshut has a pantile lean-to roof, and an outbuilding is attached to the north end.

Inside, the larger south room features chamfered cross-beams without stops and a fireplace with an early 20th-century panelled chimneypiece and an iron range. The smaller north room has chamfered axial beams with run-out stops, exposed joists, re-used patterned quarry floor tiles, and a winder staircase to the attic chambers, which are ceiled but have exposed purlins. Plank doors and a framed partition are also present.
