Description
Great Catley is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, which was refaced in the early to mid-19th century and has had further additions. It features a timber frame with a combination of painted brick infill, wattle-and-daub, a sandstone plinth, and stacks, along with brick refacing and later brick additions. The building has tiled roofs and consists of three framed bays aligned northeast to southwest, facing southeast. There are two lateral external stacks located at the rear (northwest), partly enclosed by a later lean-to addition, with further additions to the southwest. The main entrance is at the southwest end of the house, with an additional entrance toward the center of the later addition.
The farmhouse is two storeys tall, with the southeast front displaying three windows. These include 2-light casements with segmental heads flanking a central single-light window. On the ground floor, there is a 3-light casement window and a 2-light window to the right of an open porch with a ledged door. To the left, the extension has a lower roofline with two windows and a doorway, which also features a similar porch and door to the right. There is an additional door and a slatted window opening to the former dairy at the far left. The framing is exposed at the rear and on the southeast gable end, generally consisting of six square panels from sill to wall-plate with V-struts in the gable. The interior has not been inspected but is reputed to retain fragments of 17th-century panelling.
