Description
The building consists of almshouses constructed between 1859 and 1860 by Fulljames and Waller for the Jarvis Educational Foundation. They are made of English bond red brick with stone dressings and feature clay plain tile roofs with stone coping on the gables. The structure has large brick axial and lateral stacks with set-offs and follows an H-plan with cross-wings at either end, designed in the Tudor Gothic style.
The exterior is a single storey with a symmetrical south front that has a 1:6:1 window arrangement. This includes two and three-light stone mullion windows with iron casements that have horizontal glazing bars, along with a central doorway featuring a 3-centred arch, a plank door, and side lights. The projecting gabled cross-wings are adorned with stone canted bay windows topped with hipped slate roofs. The building has a plinth with chamfered stone weathering, lateral stacks, and similar doorways with side lights and stone mullion windows on the sides of the cross-wings. At the rear, there are 20th-century flat roof outshuts between the wings. The interior has not been inspected.
