Description

Townsend House is a house rebuilt in the early 19th century. It incorporates fragments from the 18th century, and possibly the 17th century, with extensions added in the mid-19th century and restoration work carried out in the late 20th century. The house is constructed of brick, rendered with a stucco finish. It has a roof of graduated stone tiles. The west front is two storeys high with a gabled attic; a gable-end stack is located to the left. There are three windows, all with boxed glazing bar sashes. A verandah with a swept glass roof, supported by wrought iron pilasters and featuring pendant anthemions at the eaves of cast iron, extends across the ground floor. The central entrance has a plaster doorcase with fluted pilasters, a moulded wooden architrave, and a half-glazed door. The right-hand gable end has mid-19th century cusped bargeboards above a canted bay window. The sashes have wooden blind boxes.
