Cowhouse And Stable About 40 Yards East Of Pontapina

This building is a cowhouse and stable located about 40 yards east of Pontapina, dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of thinly coursed rubble with dressed quoins on the ground floor and gable ends, and features a timber-framed loft with a stone slate roof that has a shallow pitch. The building has a rectangular plan aligned east to west, with a full-length catslide lean-to at the rear.

There are four doors on the ground floor, each with lightly chamfered surrounds, and four windows, one of which retains four diagonal bars. The loft is partially framed, with one panel extending up to the wall-plate, supported by some bracing and numbered re-used studs. The east gable has slit vents and a raking-strut end truss. The west gable features three openings on the ground floor, each with brick voussoirs.

Inside, there are three cow sheds with cross-placed mangers on the east side, a stable and tack room in the west bay, and calf pens located in the catslide lean-to.
