Description

The stables attached to the west side of Moat Farmhouse are likely from the 18th century. They are constructed with a timber frame on a storey-high rubble base and feature a tiled roof. The building has one and a half storeys with attic dormers, consisting of three bays. There are three roughly evenly spaced ledged stable doors and the remains of two pitch-holes above. The stables also have three 20th-century gabled dormers, one in each bay.

At the front of the right bay, there is a one-storey tiled lean-to extension, probably dating from the early 19th century. The external frame consists of regular panels that are two high from the rubble base to the wall-plate level. Regular tension braces are positioned at bay intervals on the front. The structure features interrupted tie-beam trusses that alternate with square panelled partition trusses, similar to those of the gable end but without infill. Both types of truss have small posts that support the ridge piece from very high collars near the apexes of the principal rafters. The stables are closely grouped with the adjoining Moat Farmhouse and are connected by the large mass of the farmhouse's external chimney.
