Description

Lane End Cottage is a house that possibly dates from the late 17th century to the early 18th century, with extensions and partial casing added in the 19th century. It is constructed of rubble and timber-frame with brick and plaster panels, featuring tiled roofs and an external stack at the corner of its 'L' plan layout. The left bay of the main four-bay range is now cased in rubble, which also extends to the first bay of the three-bay extension that runs at right angles to the left. The cottage has one storey and an attic, with three bays on the left and four on the right, displaying regular fenestration. The windows are primarily casements from around 1975, and there are two weatherboarded gables on each wing. The entrance is located at the rear of the left wing, accessed via a late 20th-century open porch. The framing panels are mostly three high from the cill to the wall-plate, with wavy and thin characteristics, but notably, the rear of the right-hand range has panels that are four high, likely indicating the last vernacular addition. The rubble casing at the junction of the two wings extends peculiarly partway over a ground floor segmental window head of the left-hand range.
