Description
The Shambles is a barn located at Old Hall Farm on Chapel Lane in Kingsland. It was likely built in the late 15th century or early 16th century and was extended in the 17th century. The barn features a brick frame with weatherboarded walls and a corrugated iron roof, which has a hipped design on the southeast side. It is oriented from northwest to southeast. Inside, there are five framed bays with four pairs of full crack blades, along with spurs, ties, yokes, and arch-braces. There is also a further pair of cut-down blades. The end bay to the north is constructed in a box-frame style, likely dating from the 17th century, and has jowled wall-posts. The end frame to the south includes bricks that serve as base-bricks for the hip at that end, which appear to be of a later date than those to the north. The barn has two tiers of purlins throughout, with arch-braces rising from the wall-plate. At the time of inspection in February 1987, the rafters were missing.
