Description
Malthouse Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to the 15th century, with parts rebuilt in the early 17th century, extended in the late 17th century, and refaced in the early 19th century. It features a timber-frame structure with painted brick infill on a rubble plinth, and is partially faced in painted brick. The building has an H-plan layout, with the main range aligned east to west and the east cross-wing extended to the south in the late 17th century.
There is a central chimney stack, as well as a lateral external stack on the west wall of the west cross-wing, which is made of brick on an ashlar base. The south front is mostly clad in brick and the farmhouse has two storeys, with a gable-lit attic in the right-hand cross-wing that is blind below. The main range features two 4-pane sash windows and a 3-light casement window under a segmental head on the left-hand cross-wing. The ground floor has a 3-light casement window under a segmental head on both the left-hand cross-wing and to the left of the main range.
The entrance is located at the angle of the right-hand end of the main range, which has a lean-to 19th-century porch and a half-glazed door. The framing of the cross-wings consists mostly of four square panels high. The south gable of the east cross-wing has three struts to the collar with V-struts in the apex. The interior has not been inspected, but a cruck has been recorded in the main range.
