Description

St Martin's House is a house located at 51 St Martin's Street in Hereford, with an early 19th-century front that likely conceals a late 18th-century core. The building is constructed of stucco and features a hipped slate roof with two axial brick ridge stacks. It stands three storeys tall with a cellar and has a three-window range. The central opening is blocked and set under a blind arcade in an advanced bay. To the left, there is a 20th-century 8/8 sash window, and to the right, a late 19th-century plain sash window, all under filled segmental heads with a key motif. The facade includes a storey band, 4/4 sashes, a cornice, and a parapet with a central engraved pediment. The ground floor is rusticated stucco with a storey band and engraved pilasters above. The left center features an enriched panelled door with a key motif and an overlight, beneath a 20th-century restored flat hood with scrolled consoles on fluted pilasters. The left side has a 20th-century 8/8 sash, while the right side has a 19th-century plain sash. Internal features include a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and turned newels, a six-panel door with fluted architrave on the first floor, and a 19th-century fireplace on the ground floor. The ground floor also has a picture rail, a wood-lined arch with bead architrave, fluted architraves to doors, ceiling coving, and panelled risers to windows with fluted architraves. The cellar has a flagstone floor and is stone-lined. The right returned side, known as No. 4 St Martin's Avenue, is similar but features all plain sashes, an unblocked central opening, and a simpler hood and consoles with a panelled architrave.
