Description
This is a group of three early 19th-century houses located on St Martin’s Street, Hereford. The buildings are constructed of brick with a stone plinth and have Welsh slate roofs, along with three rendered axial stacks at the rear. They are three storeys high, with a cellar, and have a three-window front. The upper floors feature 10/10 French windows (replaced in the 20th century) under segmental arches, with wrought-iron lattice balcony guards, and 2/2 sash windows (also 20th-century replacements) to the centre, over which is a 4/4 sash window. Brick modillion eaves are present. The entrances, located to the right, consist of 6-panel doors with fanlights, set under gauged brick semicircular arches with stone springers and keyblocks. To the left are 8/8 sash windows under segmental arches.
The interior of Number 17 features a 19th-century dogleg staircase with stick balusters and turned newels, extending to the second floor. The second floor has a 19th-century fireplace. On the first floor, there is a 19th-century fireplace, a moulded ceiling cornice, and a 4-panel door. The ground floor also boasts a moulded ceiling cornice. The cellar is brick-lined with a stone stack base, and includes a plank door.
Number 19 mirrors the interior layout of Number 17, featuring a similar dogleg staircase. The second floor has two plank doors, the first floor a 4-panel door and cornice, and the ground floor a 4-panel door. The cellar is brick-lined with a cobbled floor and a stone stack base.
Number 21's interior also follows the same pattern as the other two houses with respect to the staircase.
