Description
This house, located at 2 St Martin's Street, Hereford, dates to approximately 1886 and incorporates elements of a late 15th-century bridge structure. It is constructed of brick, with some areas painted, and has a hipped slate roof and a brick end stack. A stone cellar is also present. The building has three storeys, an attic, and a cellar. The front elevation facing St Martin’s Street has a three-window arrangement; a single window is found on the canted corner, and the right return has a two-window range. Windows are predominantly 1/1 sash windows with moulded stone heads and sills. A square oriel window with a pediment is situated to the left. The windows on the upper floors are 2/2 sashes. The ground floor features a central doorcase, a larger window to the right, and a 1/1 sash to the left. Similar sashes and a doorway are found on the corner and the return elevation, along with a matching oriel window on the right return. Deep eaves are supported by carved brackets. The cellar projects toward the river bank and contains walling that forms part of the original Wye Bridge (listed separately). Part of the cellar extending further south may also be a section of the original bridge abutment. An archaeological investigation in 1993 identified these bridge remains.
