Description

Norfolk Terrace is a row of late 18th-century houses located on the east side of St Martin’s Street, Hereford. The terrace comprises numbers 25 to 39 (odd numbers) and is arranged with two central units advanced. The building is constructed of brick with a stone plinth and has a roof of large, hand-cut Welsh slates. Seven brick ridge stacks are present. The façade has an eight-window range, with 6/6 sash windows, mostly 20th century replacements, and 2/2 sashes at number 35. Each window is set under a segmental arch, framed by modillioned eaves that continue as a pediment. This central pediment features a three-light mullioned casement with some original glass. Six lead box dormers, with various casements, have been added later in the 19th century. The ground floor has six-panel doors with fanlights, each set within a semicircular gauged brick arch supported by stone springers and keyblocks and set within a continuous stone storeyband. Number 39 has a more recent 20th-century door and shop front, set under a simpler hood.

Interior features vary by property. Number 25 has a 19th-century dogleg staircase with stick balusters and turned newels. The second floor has plank doors, the first floor has four-panel doors, a 19th-century fireplace, and a wall cupboard with panelled doors. The ground floor features a panelled door, a corner cupboard, and a fireplace. The cellar is partly stone-lined. Numbers 27, 29, 31, 33, and 39 all share a similar dogleg staircase design with stick balusters and turned newels. Number 39 has a chequered tile floor and part-glazed panelled doors. Cellars in several properties have cobbled floors, brick linings, or stone linings.
