Description
The building is a stable located about 30 yards north-west of Whitfield, likely dating from the late 18th century and partly remodeled in the early 19th century. It is constructed of brick with finely coursed sandstone and sandstone dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The stable has a rectangular plan that runs roughly north to south and is two storeys high.
The east elevation features six windows with 9-pane sash frames set under wedge lintels, arranged three on each side of a large semi-circular headed full-height triumphal arch, which has a prominent projecting keystone in an advanced pedimented center. The ground floor includes horizontally hinged iron casements and lunettes, each positioned beneath smaller versions of the large central arch. A bold plain string course separates the two storeys, and there is a moulded deep stone cornice. Lean-to wings on the left and right each contain one large two-leafed door under a semi-circular head.
The west elevation has a lower extension to the north, featuring a central 3-centred archway with a lunette in a pediment above. There is also a clock facing west on a second pediment behind the arch, and a weathervane in the shape of a fox is positioned on the ridge between the opposing pediments. The interior is noted for having a clock mechanism, a bell, and stalls equipped with iron fittings. Additionally, there is a mounting block attached to the south side of the central west entrance arch.
