Description

The stabling building located about 20 meters southwest of Pengreep House dates from the late 18th century. It features a Flemish bond brick front with a granite plinth, sills, quoins, string courses, keystones, and some lintels, while the rest of the structure is built from rubble. The building has a hipped roof with a hidden valley and a pediment on the southeast side, which includes a ridge intersection topped with a clock, bellcote, and weathervane. The roof is primarily covered with scantle slate, except for the southwest and rear northwest sections, which use asbestos slate.

The stables have a three-bay double depth plan and are two storeys tall. The symmetrical southeast front has a layout of two window bays, a central bay, and one window bay on each side. The central bay, which features an open pediment, is slightly projected forward. The ground floor includes a tripartite window with chamfered lintels above, a blind centre light, and a Venetian window above that has a round fanlight rising into the tympanum of the pediment. The middle light consists of a pair of ledged loading doors flanked by blind sidelights. The identical two-window bays on either side contain doorways leading towards the middle bay, with ledged doors and overlights. The building has shallow keyed brick arches, tall windows on the ground floor, and square windows on the first floor. The windows are horned sashes with glazing bars on the front, northeast side (first floor), and rear (ground floor), while older 12-pane two-light casements remain in other areas, except for blind windows where the glazing bars are painted on.

The symmetrical northeast front has four windows, with a doorway located below the first and fourth windows, and two of the windows to the left of the middle are blind. The symmetrical two-window rear includes a central loading door on the first floor. The southwest side has two windows, with one positioned towards the front and the other being blind. Inside, the building features stone floors and 19th-century ramped cast iron partitions between the standings, while the roof structure was replaced in the 20th century.
