Description
Daren Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 16th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and 20th century. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a roof that is partly tiled and partly covered with Welsh slate. The building is a longhouse oriented north-east to south-west, facing south-east, and includes a former byre at the lower north-east end. There are later inserted stacks that back onto the former through-passage and at the north-east gable end.
The farmhouse is a single storey with an attic. The south-east front has four 20th-century dormer windows, two 2-light 20th-century windows in cambered-headed openings on the left, and a similar window to the right of the doorway, which has a ledged door. Inside, the structure reveals cruck construction with three largely intact trusses, although they have been cut at a lower level. There is a 17th-century inserted ceiling in the byre end. The tie-beam to the east of the through-passage has only small mortices for a light partition, suggesting that the passage was also used as a feedwalk to the byre. This farmhouse is an important example that illustrates the principal features of the longhouse plan.
