Description
First World War memorial.
DESCRIPTION: the memorial stands at the centre of a crossroads, close to The Smithy (Grade II) and Yew Tree Cottage (Grade II).
The memorial comprises a plain stone Latin cross on a tapering octagonal shaft with a square plinth and three-stepped octagonal base.
The main inscription in incised lettering on the plinth reads: (south face) THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED BY THE/ PARISHIONERS TO THE GLORY OF GOD,/ AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR,/ 1914–1919/ (west face) GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS,/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS/ (north face) (4 NAMES)/ (east face)THANKS BE TO GOD WHO/ GIVETH US THE VICTORY.
