Description
The Churchyard Cross and War Memorial, located in the churchyard of the Church of St Nicholas, is a 15th-century village cross that was restored as a war memorial after the First World War. It was further altered to include an inscription following the Second World War.
The memorial is made of stone and has a square plan. It features a Celtic-style cross with carved faces, which sits atop a tapering plinth that connects to the socket of the original village cross. On the eastern face of the socket, there is an inscription that reads, "THIS ANCIENT/ CROSS WAS RESTORED IN/ MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS/ PARISH WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918/ WHOSE NAMES ARE INSCRIBED/ ON THE TABLET IN THE CHURCH." The north face of the cross bears the inscription, "SECOND GREAT WAR/ 1939 - 45." The entire structure stands on a stone plinth.
