Description

Upper Monkton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with a 19th-century extension. It features a sandstone rubble plinth and porch columns, a timber-frame structure with brick infill, and an asbestos slate roof with end stacks. The building has a T-plan layout, with a cross-wing oriented roughly north-west to south-east and a 19th-century cow-house extension to the south-east. It has a cellar and two storeys.

The north-east elevation includes three windows, featuring early and late 19th-century casements. To the left of the central gabled porch front is a two-light window, while the porch itself has a 3-light wooden casement on each of the upper floors. The right part of the elevation has a 15-pane wrought-iron casement on each floor. The central entry is beneath a projecting porch supported by two columns with moulded abaci. To the right of the entry, there is a 4-light mullioned window with ovolo mouldings.

Inside, the farmhouse has many ground floor ceiling beams with notched run-out chamfer stops of varying designs. There is a fireplace with moulded stone jambs that rise from decorative stops at their bases to a segmental oak lintel with matching mouldings. The cross-wall appears to be designed at two levels with plank and muntin screens, alongside an inserted staircase that leads to an entrance with an ogeed head.
