Ye Old Forge And Adjoining Outbuilding

Ye Old Forge and the adjoining outbuilding is a house that likely served as a former smithy, dating from around 1600. It was extended in the late 17th century, with further alterations in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. The building is timber-framed with rendered infill on a rubble base, featuring some rubble walling and weatherboarding, topped with a machine-tiled roof. It has four framed bays running east to west; the two easternmost bays are original and include an external rubble chimney at the eastern end, while the two westernmost bays are a later addition. The structure is single-storey with an attic that includes dormers. The framing consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate throughout, with the eastern bays made of heavy framing and the western bays of scantling timber. No trusses are visible from the outside.

On the north front elevation, there are three two-light casements (one with a plank weathering) and a single-light casement on the ground floor, along with three gabled dormers featuring two-light casements. The main entrance in the east bay has a 20th-century gabled canopy supported by metal brackets and a half-glazed 20th-century door. The adjoining outbuilding at the west end is constructed of rubble and part weatherboarded timber-frame, with a corrugated asbestos roof and a large doorway at the eastern end.
