Description
Pikestye Cottage is a late 17th or early 18th century cottage with later 20th and 21st century additions and alterations. Originally a one-and-a-half storey building with a two-cell plan, it is timber-framed with a stone stack on the south gable end and an asbestos tile roof. The main entrance is on the north gable end.
The exterior shows six by three cells of small framing on both flanks, with 20th century one and two-light casement windows to the ground floor. An eastern elevation features a two-light, 20th century dormer with a flat head. The south gable end has a rubble stone chimney stack with offsets above a square brick chimney. The walling to the left of the chimney has been rebuilt and timber planks have been applied to imitate framing. The north gable end is obscured by a 21st century two-storey addition that projects north and east of the original cottage and is rendered and colour-washed.
The interior reveals a ground floor cill apparent in both ground floor rooms, both featuring chamfered axial ceiling beams supporting widely-spaced joists. A small framed partition wall divides the rooms. A 20th century fireplace bressumer and staircase are present. On the first floor, the heads of jowled corner posts are visible along with small framing in the outer walls. The ridge and purlins are evident, as is a central dividing wall with tie and collar beams and a central doorway, featuring angled braces to the apex.
Pikestye Cottage is designated as a building of group value because it is a good example of a small cottage reflecting local vernacular traditions and retains much of its historic framing.
