Description

This is a monument built in 1799. Constructed of painted ashlar, it stands on a moulded plinth with a moulded cornice and a shallow hipped top. An inscription details a battle fought on 2nd February 1461, during the Wars of the Roses, between the forces of Edward Mortimer, Earl of March (later Edward IV), and Henry VI, resulting in a victory for Edward and significant losses on both sides. The inscription also mentions Owen Tudor, a descendant of Cadwallader, who was taken prisoner and later beheaded at Hereford. It concludes that this battle was decisive in securing Edward IV’s claim to the English throne. Further inscription states the monument was erected by public subscription in 1799.
