Description
The building is a barn and cowhouse, likely dating from the mid-18th century, located about 30 yards southeast of Ford Farmhouse. It is constructed from a combination of sandstone rubble and timber framing, with weatherboarding and plain tiled roofs that are hipped at the north end. The barn features seven bays oriented north to south, with wagon bays that have opposed cart entries and double doors located in the third and sixth bays from the south end. The lower parts of the walls are made of stone and include ventilation slits. There are two loft openings on the east elevation.
Inside the barn, the framing consists of long rectangular panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate, with some long straight braces in the lower corners. It has six intermediate collar and tie-beam trusses, with raking struts at the lower angles and two tiers of trenched purlins. The cowhouse, which is attached to the north gable end of the barn, is slightly lower in height and has six bays across two levels. The lower parts of its walls are also made of stone and feature triangular ventilation openings. The east elevation has two doors and two loft openings, while the north end bay is open at the lower level for cart storage. The interior of the cowhouse has similar wall framing to the barn, with braces in the upper corners and collar and tie-beam trusses with two tiers of trenched purlins. Additionally, there is a lean-to addition supported by timber posts at the north end. This building is included for its group value.
