Description
Grove Cottage is an estate cottage dating from the early 19th century, likely designed by G S Repton for Richard Arkwright of Hampton Court. It is constructed of red sandstone rubble with a roughcast finish on the south front and the east and west sides. The roof is covered with plain tiles, featuring gabled ends and a hipped outshut at the rear, which was probably originally thatched. A large roughcast chimney stack is located on the east gable end.
The building has an L-shaped layout, consisting of a one-room main range with the chimney on the right (east) gable end. There is a central entrance on the south front leading directly into the main room, with a chamber above. A short service wing extends to the rear left, and there is an outshut in the angle; another outshut on the right end was likely originally an open-sided store.
The cottage is one storey with an attic. The south front features a single bay with a central doorway that has a panelled and glazed door. Above this is a 20th-century gabled dormer with a casement window. The right outshut has a lean-to roof made of corrugated asbestos and a 20th-century casement window. The west side has a gabled section on the right with a large canted bay window containing leaded panes, a small metal casement window at the centre, and a hipped tiled roof. Above this bay window is a small two-light casement with leaded panes, a hoodmould, and small cill brackets. There is also a similar single-light window on the ground floor of the left wing.
At the rear, the gable-ended wing on the right features a plank door with cover moulds, and the main roof extends over an integral outshut on the right. Inside, the main room has panelled cupboard doors beside the side stack, a 20th-century chimneypiece, and ceiling beams that are plastered over.
