Description

The Nest is a house dating from the 17th century, with 20th-century alterations. It is timber-framed with a sandstone rubble plinth and 20th-century plastered infill, topped with tiled roofs. The building has an L-plan layout, consisting of a range of four bays aligned east to west, with a two-bay cross-wing at the east end. It features two axial stacks and one gable-end stack, with entrances on the south side and at the west gable end. The house is single storey with an attic.

On the south front, there are three 20th-century gabled dormers with two-light leaded casement windows, and a small window below the eaves to the left of centre. The ground floor includes a pair of two-light 20th-century leaded casement windows to the left of a part-glazed 20th-century door, and a further similar window to the left of another similar door, with a pair of two-light casement windows to the right. The gabled end of the cross-wing to the right has a jettied upper storey, supported by a plain bressummer on curved brackets with incised decoration. The upper floor features a three-light 20th-century leaded casement window, while the ground floor has a four-light window, and a square-framed surround of a former diamond mullioned window survives on the right-hand return of the cross-wing.

Inside, the building retains chamfered ceiling beams and a triangular doorhead in the upper room of the cross-wing.
