Description

The Steps is a 17th-century house, restored in the middle of the 20th century. It is timber-framed with brick infill, partially weatherboarded, and sits on a coursed rubble plinth. The roof is slate and corrugated iron. The house has an L-shaped layout with sections extending to the east and south. A substantial main stack is located on the east gable, constructed of rubble with a brick shaft. The western front features a two-storey cross-wing to the left, with a gabled attic and a three-light casement window on each floor; a single-light casement is low-set to the right on the ground floor. The main entrance is located in the north wall of the cross-wing, and is sheltered by a gabled tiled porch. A range to the right is blind to the street.
