Description
Ashfield Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, with an extension added in the late 17th century, and some alterations from the 18th century and mid-20th century. It features a timber frame with rendered infill, built on a base of painted rubble, and has a stone slate roof. The structure consists of three framed bays aligned east to west, with the western bay being the later addition. The main chimney stack is located on the west gable of the original two-bay house and has a brick shaft, with an additional stack at the southeast corner.
The east front, which faces the street, is two storeys high and gabled, featuring an underbuilt jetty. There are two 2-light casements above a fixed casement on the left, and a 2-light casement on the right. The main entrance on the north front has a 20th-century gabled and tiled porch with half-glazed sides. The framing consists of four square panels high with straight angle braces. The east gable truss includes three struts to the collar, V-struts in the apex, and trenched purlins. Inside, the cottage has exposed chamfered and stopped ceiling beams.
