Description

The Smithy is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and 20th century. It is timber-framed with painted brick infill, although it has largely been refaced with brick and features a sandstone plinth and a tiled roof. The building has an L-plan layout facing south, with a cross-wing at the east end. There is a north gable end stack on the cross-wing that has two circular shafts, and another stack is located at the west gable end of the main range, which also includes a later single-storey extension to the west. The entrance is centrally located on the main range. The building is two storeys high with a basement beneath the cross-wing. It features 2-light casement windows flanking a ledged door, and there are two similar windows on the right-hand return of the cross-wing, along with a lower ledged door that provides access to the basement. The framing is incomplete, showing three and four square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with V-struts in the gable.
