Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church located in Stoke Edith, originally listed as the Parish Church. The church features a 14th-century west tower with a 17th-century recessed needle spire that was capped in 1940. The nave and chancel were rebuilt between 1740 and 1743 by Henry Flitcroft, who was Clerk of Works to the Crown for Thomas Foley. The tower is constructed of dressed and coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, while the nave and chancel are made of stuccoed brick and topped with a slate roof.
The west tower has four stages, diagonal buttressing, and a recessed needle spire. It includes 2-light windows at the bell stage and single lights in the lower stages, with a door located on the ground floor. The nave and chancel consist of five bays, featuring doorways in the first and last bays with moulded architraves and panelled doors, oculi above each door, and three semicircular-headed arched windows with pronounced keystones and imposts, along with brackets to the sills.
Inside, a pair of giant Tuscan columns separates the entrance bay from the main body of the church, and similar columns separate the marbled chancel end. The church retains its contemporary box pews. The font is a small marble bowl supported on a wrought-iron stand. Notable monuments include a late 15th-century tomb with an alabaster effigy of a female in contemporary dress on the north wall of the entrance bay, as well as numerous wall tablets commemorating members of the Foley family.
