Description

The Old Schoolhouse is a building that was originally a schoolhouse and has since been converted into a house. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and has undergone later alterations. The structure is made of sandstone rubble, sandstone ashlar, and brick, topped with a stone slate roof that is hipped at the rear and features brick stacks.

The building has a rectangular plan that runs roughly east to west, with a polygonal projection at the west end. It stands two storeys tall. The east elevation features a wrought iron central casement window with two lights and a fanlight, all set under a dressed round arch on the first floor. The ground floor has a similar arch with a late 20th-century door that includes a glazed semi-circular head.

On the left return wall, which is made of brick, there is a mid- or late 19th-century lean-to that has a weatherboarded front. The north elevation includes round-headed openings with casement windows similar to those on the entrance front, complete with advanced keystones; there are two on the first floor and three on the ground floor. The west elevation is constructed of ashlar and features a parapet, three canted round-headed windows on the first floor of the polygonal projection, and a central ledged door with a round arch.
