Description

The Old School is a building that was originally constructed as a school and is now used as a house. It likely dates from around 1835, although some sources suggest it could be from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The structure is made of ashlar stone with a tiled roof featuring gable ends, and it has stone dressings along with ashlar stacks that have brick flues.

The west facade is a single storey with a range of four windows. To the left, there is a cross-wing that presents a gable to the front. This gable features a three-light ashlar mullioned and transomed window, with each light having a four-centred head. Above this window, there is a lancet opening with a two-centred head that contains stone flag louvres. The remaining windows are likely 20th-century wooden two-light square windows with pointed heads under concrete lintels and horizontal glazing bars.

To the right of the cross-wing, there is a high two-centred stone arch with a door beneath a four-centred arch. This door is flanked on the right by a stone buttress. Between the two right-hand windows, there is a projecting stone stack with a brick flue that has three stages; the flue is set diagonally and features a moulded capping. The buttressed north wall is a prominent feature in Penny Street. This building is probably the National School mentioned by Hutchins as being built in 1835.
