Description
Oldcastle Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into a holiday accommodation. It dates from the late 17th century to the early 18th century. The building features part timber framing on a stone plinth over a cellar on the left side, with stone end walls, a brick left gable, brick gable window heads and surrounds, and brick quoins to the end stacks. The roof is tiled with brick verges, and there is a local type external stone chimney with offsets and a detached shaft at the center of the rear.
The farmhouse is two stories high with an attic and consists of four bays. It has regularly placed cross casements in iron with lead cames on both floors, with the left-hand windows being higher. The entrance is located in the second bay from the right, accessed through a gabled hood supported by a pair of consoles decorated with acanthus leaves, leading to a contemporary six-panelled door.
The framing consists of six panels high from the plinth to the eaves. In the front two right-hand bays, there is wall-framing only in the top panel, with the rest covered by trompe-l'oeil framing over render. Inside, there is a contemporary dog-leg staircase with fat balusters and a large wooden lintel above the fireplace inside the external chimney. The left-hand ground floor room features a much higher ceiling than the others, suggesting a possible extension at that end, although the roof has not been inspected. The artificial framing on the right side indicates rebuilding, but the similar end walls and continuous panels below the eaves provide a unifying appearance.
