Description

The Richard Payne Knight monument is a chest tomb located about 10 yards northeast of the northeast corner of the Church of St Mary. It was erected in 1824 and is made of limestone featuring large prominent fossils and finer grained end and side panels. The tomb is designed in an austere Neo-Classical style, resting on a high base with a chamfered plinth that supports the chest tomb, which has recessed margins on the side and end panels. It is topped with a low hipped capping.

The east side of the monument bears an inscription in incised lettering that honors Richard Payne Knight, describing his qualities and contributions, including his engagement with Greek literature and his esteemed presence among friends. The inscription concludes with a tribute from his loving brother, noting that the monument was placed in memory of a generous and kind man who passed away at the age of 74 in the year 1824.
