Description
Hawk's Nest is a house that likely dates from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and early 20th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings and features a tiled roof along with large sandstone rubble side stacks that have brick shafts. The building has a rectangular plan oriented west-south-west to east-north-east and stands two storeys high with an attic.
On the south elevation, there is a central window, which is a 2-light leaded casement, probably from the early 20th century. This window is situated between large external stacks and is supported by a large oak beam. Beneath the beam, there is a recessed entry that contains a ledged door. The gables are adorned with three rows of narrow mullioned windows, featuring four lights in the attic and eight lights on the two lower floors. The mullions are square and have moulded dripstones. Additionally, there are projecting purlins and a ridge piece.
The interior was inaccessible during the re-survey in February 1987, but it was noted by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHM) to contain various timbers, a noteworthy truss, and parts of an early 18th-century staircase.
