Description
Wormsley Grange is a house that likely dates back to the early 18th century, with mid-19th century and later alterations. It is constructed of squared sandstone rubble and sandstone ashlar, topped with tiled roofs and featuring sandstone end stacks. The building includes brick vaulted cellars and has a rectangular plan with two parallel ranges aligned north to south, along with a service wing attached to the southwest corner. It has a cellar, three storeys, and attics.
The east elevation showcases five windows with glazing bar sashes, although the central windows are misaligned due to the staircase. The ground floor features a pair of three-light bay windows, likely from the mid-19th century, with glazing bar sashes that are separated by moulded attached shafts rising to a cornice. There is a central six-panelled door, and to the left, a one-window service wing has a hipped pantiled roof.
Inside, there is a large brick barrel vaulted cellar with chamfered sandstone doorways. The ground floor retains fragments of 17th-century panelling, a flagged stone floor, and two kitchen fireplaces made of sandstone, each with arches and dropped keystones. An oak staircase from the 18th century features four flights in a dog-leg design with turned balusters. The trusses in the building have plain collars and cambered tie-beams. In the attics, there are early 19th-century cast iron fireplaces with raised baskets.
Wormsley Grange is notable as the birthplace of Richard Payne Knight and Thomas Andrew Knight, whose monuments can be found in the nearby churchyard of the Church of St Mary.
