Description
Two adjoining timber-framed tenements, numbers 42 and 43, stand on the west side of the A417 road and date primarily from the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and 20th century. The construction is timber-framed with wattle-and-daub infill in most areas, although some sections have painted brick. A sandstone plinth runs along the base, with external brick stacks and weatherboard cladding on the west gable. The roof is slate-covered. The buildings have seven framed bays in total, with four bays belonging to number 43 and three to number 42, running east to west and facing south. Large external stacks with bread ovens are set into both gable ends. An entrance to number 43 is centrally located on the south side, while a 20th-century entrance to number 42 is incorporated into the east gable end. There are also 19th-century additions to the west gable end. The buildings consist of a single storey with an attic, featuring four gabled dormers with two-light casement windows in the attic—two to each house. The ground-floor windows are generally two- or three-light casements, with weathering above the lintels. A ledged door serves number 43, and three similar two-light windows are found at number 42. The timber framing is largely intact but irregular, consisting of three square panels extending from the sill to the wall plate. The trusses have two struts to the collar and V-struts in the gable.
