Description

The Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century, with possible origins in an earlier period, and altered in the 20th century. It is timber-framed with painted brick infill, a sandstone plinth, brick stacks, and a 20th-century tiled roof, half-hipped to the south. The house comprises four framed bays aligned north/south and facing east, with a 20th-century brick extension to the west forming an L-shaped plan. The entrance is now located in the angle of the L. There are end stacks to the original north/south range. The house is single-storey with an attic. The east front includes a 20th-century skylight and a gabled dormer with a two-light, multi-pane casement window north of centre. There are two irregularly sized three-light casement windows on the ground floor. The timber framing appears largely complete, though altered. A cruck truss is visible in the south gable end, and another similar truss is reputedly present in the interior. The framing features irregularly spaced square panels, generally two and three panels from sill to wall-plate.
