Description

Chandlers is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is timber-framed with some wattle-and-daub infill, a sandstone plinth, and sandstone stacks with brick shafts. The south gable end is clad in shingles, and the roof is thatched. The building was originally three bays wide, aligned north/south and facing east. A 20th-century half-bay has been added to the south gable end, enclosing a stack, with a further stack to the north. A 20th-century extension is present at the rear, and the main entrance is now at the rear of the property. The house has a single storey, an attic, and a cellar. It features three eyebrow dormer windows with 2-light casement windows, three similar 2-light casement windows on the ground floor, and a heavy ledged door to the cellar entry in the north gable end. The north stack has two diagonal plan shafts. The timber framing is largely intact, consisting generally of three square panels from sill to wall plate. Internally, the house contains chamfered ceiling beams. It was formerly divided into tenements and is now used as a single dwelling.
