Description
The granary, located approximately 10 meters south-west of Hergest Court, is a significant building dating from the early 14th century, with alterations made in the 16th century and late 19th century. Constructed of sandstone rubble, it features a hipped Welsh slate roof and is a rectangular block situated to the south-west of the main house, with entrances on the south-east side.
The building stands two storeys high, though it may have been reduced in height over time. On the upper level, there are three loft openings to the left of a small pointed window with chamfered jambs and head; the central loft opening may have originally been a doorway, also with chamfered jambs. The ground floor includes a 19th-century window with a segmental brick head to the left of a mutilated 14th-century doorway with a segmental arched head, and another 19th-century window to the right, accompanied by an additional 19th-century doorway and window. The rear of the building shows traces of further 2-light windows that have been blocked and now have square heads. The structure is buttressed on the south-east and south-west sides and retains part of a stack at the rear.
Inside, the first floor features a very large 16th-century fireplace, complete with a chamfered surround and a massive single stone lintel that has a coved shelf above. The softwood roof dates from the late 19th century. This granary is believed to have originally served as the solar wing of the now-demolished aisled hall, which once connected it to the remaining structures at Hergest Court.
