Description

Hill Farmhouse and the adjoining barn are a 17th-century farmhouse and barn that were altered in the 20th century. The farmhouse is timber-framed, featuring a mix of wattle-and-daub and painted brick infill, with a sandstone plinth and stacks, and brick shafts. The barn is also timber-framed and has weatherboard cladding, with tiled roofs.

The house has three framed bays and is oriented north/south, facing east. The main entrance is on the west front, which has a large external lateral stack at the center and another large external stack at the south gable end. There are minor 20th-century additions to the south. The barn, which has four framed bays and a threshing floor located north of the center, adjoins the farmhouse to the north.

The farmhouse is two storeys tall, and the west front features irregular fenestration, including one 2-light casement window and one single-light window flanking the central stack. On the ground floor, there is one 2-light window, a projecting window in the angle formed by the stack to the left, and a 2-light window with a segmental head to the right of a lean-to porch that has a ledged door. The framing of the house is largely intact, with three square panels from the sill to the wall-plate and angle bracing from the main posts to the wall-plate. The interior retains a broad open fireplace, which was recorded by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England in 1932. The adjoining four-bay barn has been altered at the rear and is included for its group value.
