Description
This barn, located about 20 yards north of Broadfield Court, is likely from the late 16th century. It features a timber frame with brick infill set on a base of sandstone rubble, and the gable ends are constructed of sandstone rubble and brick. The roof is made of stone slate laid in diminishing courses and has a parapet at the west end. The barn consists of five framed bays arranged east to west, with wagon bays that have opposing cart entries in the first and fourth bays from the west end. The wagon bay at the west end includes a gabled porch wing on its south side.
The framing includes three rows of square panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate. The porch wing features a collar and tie-beam truss with decorative raking struts. There are five tiers of ledges and entry holes for pigeons in the gable. The brick panels have header ventilation openings, and the stone wall at the east end contains two tiers of ventilation slits. Inside, the roof has four intermediate collar and tie-beam trusses with a central strut, raking struts in the lower corners beneath the collar, and a V-strut above the collar. The cross-frames are supported by large swept braces in their lower corners.
