Description

This is a 17th-century barn, with some alterations from the 18th century, located at Broadbridge Farm. It is a timber-framed structure of five bays, built on a sandstone base. The exterior is clad in weatherboarding, with a central double door and a gabled tiled roof. A central cart entrance originally existed, but was later filled in. The interior retains 17th-century wall framing with curved tension braces in the southwestern two bays and end wall. The second bay from the southwest has a curved passing brace, while the two northeastern bays on that side also feature passing braces. The northeastern end and the two northeastern bays on the southwest side have only upright posts. Throughout the barn are jowled posts, a midrail, and tiebeams with curved tension braces. The roof is an 18th-century angled queenstrut design, incorporating clasped purlins, pegged rafters without a ridgepiece, and some diagonal braces. The barn’s timber frame is of good quality, exhibiting substantial timber sections.
