Thomas Andrew Knight Monument About 15 Yards North East Of North East Corner Of The Church Of St Mary

The Thomas Andrew Knight monument is a chest tomb located about 15 yards northeast of the northeast corner of the Church of St Mary. It dates from 1838 and is made of fossilised limestone in a simple Neo-Classical style. The tomb features a plain base and a low hipped chamfered capping. The side and end panels have recessed margins and are crafted from finer limestone.

On the east and west sides, there is incised lettering in Latin. The inscription on the east side commemorates Thomas Andrew Knight, who was associated with Downton Castle and Wormsley Grange, and served as the President of the Horticultural Society of London. It describes him as possessing a keen mind for understanding nature, a charitable heart, and a generous hand for those in need. The inscription notes that he died in his 80th year on May 11, 1838, and that his widow erected the monument in his memory.

The west side of the tomb also honors Frances, the widow of Thomas Andrew Knight, who survived him along with two of their children. It reflects on her kindness and generosity, mentioning her passing on July 26, 1847, in her 84th year, with a hopeful message of resurrection.
