Description
39 and 40 High Street are houses that have been converted into shops and dwellings, dating from the late 18th century. They are constructed of brick with ashlar detailing and feature a Welsh slate roof with tile-coped gable parapets. The building has three storeys and a four-window range. On the left side, there are two 18th-century 6/6 sash windows, while the right side has two 19th-century plain sashes. The windows are topped with gauged brick flat arches, and there are 3/6 sashes above them, along with moulded wood eaves.
The shopfront for No. 39 is from the 20th century, while No. 40 has an early 20th-century shopfront that includes a central half-glazed panelled door with a plain overlight, flanked by plate-glass windows with curved returns and moulded glazing bars. This is set beneath a moulded fascia board and hood, supported by panelled pilasters.
The left side of the building is finished in rubble, while the front is ashlar. There is a wing at the rear of the building, which has a 20th-century door in an altered opening beneath a stone flat arch, with a casement window above it in another altered opening under a brick flat arch. The rear of the building is brick, with a rendered gable on the wing of No. 40, and the wing of No. 39 features a steep-pitched Welsh slate roof and a brick stack.
