Description

The Monument to Spencer Perceval is a Grade II listed structure located in Thoresby Park, dating from 1812. It features a sarcophagus set on a rectangular base made of ashlar stone. The base has an inscribed plinth and a moulded cornice. The plinth bears the inscription: "And you, great Spencer, with your latest breath, Did'st feel your ruling passion strong in Death. Such in those moments as in all the past Oh save my country Heaven was your last." The base also includes the inscription: "In memory of The Right Honourable excellent and most Amiable Spencer Perceval, Basely and Barbarously murdered in the Exercise of his Duty May 11th 1812." The sarcophagus itself has scalloped rounded ends, scrolled reeded cradles, and a hipped lid. Spencer Perceval served as Prime Minister from 1809 to 1812 and was assassinated in the House of Commons.
